The moment we’ve have been sitting on our hands for all year is almost here. We’ve literally been working around the clock making cups, decanters, lights, and a special new surprise (hmmmm what could it be now?) to bring to the show The furniture has been made, the signpainted, and our pop up shop is almost ready to open….. Now for the 8 hour drive to Melbourne.
At DesignMadeTrade, illumini will be presenting to an interstate audience for the first time since Launch Pad, 2010. We are so proud to show everyone what we’ve been up to since then. Fun, meaningful, and most importantly socially responsible design and creativity is alive and well at illumini headquarters, and we’re keen to spread the word.
If you can stop by DesignMadeTrade, it will be on at the Royal Exhibition Hall in Carlton, Melbourne Thursday 19/7 to Sunday 22/7 from 10am-5pm (trade only Thurs. and Fri.) We’ll be looking cool in Stall 25, just behind the JamFactory…go figure.
Thank you thank you thank you to all of the local Adelaide local artists, designers, and suppliers who have helped us put and pull our act together, including especially Andrew Bartlette (display), Caren Eliss (ID) Jaan Poldaas (glass), Jamfactory Glass and Furniture Studios, Computer Cut (routing), Aztronics (electrical), Ashlee Page (video) and the Government of South Australia, Arts SA for providing us the means to attend the show through its Project Funding grant. We couldn’t have done any of it without them.
If you’re looking for the easiest way to pick up the illumini decanter without having to get off the couch, put on your clothes, and drive to Adelaide… you are in luck. Iconic Australian design merchant Top3 by Design now carries our baby and is available through their website. Head on over, and while you’re there make sure to have a look at all of the other imaginative, stylish, and well rendered products they have on offer including designs we wished we’d thought of by our good friends Deb Jones and the JamFactory. Just don’t forget the decanter.
Karen and I have so much on this year that instead of filling up a post, we’ve decided to start a whole new page. Scroll up to the menu above and click on said “Where we’ll be when” to find out the exact time and location co-oridinates of our collective and individual upcoming shindigs. If you meet us there and mention this post, I’ll give you a hug for free.
We got some good news this week, and you know I can’t help but be excited. Illumini has been chronicled in the upcoming book, the Annual South Australian Design Atlas, to be released by Wakefield Press and the Integrated Design Commission SA this July. Its early days, but we believe this to be some sort of general roadmap of the local designers and architects who give the region such an exceptional reputation throughout Australia, and all over the world. The essay on our practice will focus on the nature of the collaberative process, as well as the intentions and motivations behind our work. We’re pretty flattered to be included. I’ll let you know as soon as we know more.

Here’s to the New Year…
Our very own Karen Cunningham will be lending her talent and charisma to the position of Creative Director of the Glass Design Studio at JamFactory in the new year. We’re really looking forward to seeing her tackle the new role, and the fresh insights into the worlds of arts training and integrated design she will bring to program in 2012.
In other recent developments… illumini has finally found a new home! Over the holidays and into January, we will be clearing out and setting up shop in a secret tin shed in the backwoods of Uraidla, South Australia. There will be heaps of work ahead to complete the transformation from Machine Shed to Glass Design Studio, but we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and get dirty. If you’d like to come lend a hand, beer and wine will definitely be involved. New products, including new illumini lights to follow.
And lastly, if you haven’t already picked up the Spring copy of Adelaide Hills magazine, please make a detour to the newsagent now. Mandi’s practice is featured in an in depth article in the Gallery section. Be quick, as it will only be on the racks until December 20th.
If you’re looking for places to find our work over the holidays, you’re in luck. Five stockists have been added for the month of December in New South Wales and South Australia. If none of the shops listed below are located in your area, you can always purchase the old fashioned way by contacting us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
