Our trip to Melbourne was a bit of a whirlwind, but well worth the effort. To our surprise and delight, the Illumini Decanter won the InDesign Magazine Award at LaunchPad. A huge honour indeed, given the the tight competition from the twenty other entries which included a wall-compactible line dryer for apartments, and a personal favorite, a grandfather clock that runs on double AA batteries! From our success, a dialogue was opened up at Living Edge about the role of the handmade object in the current state of design practice, bringing to light the rising importance of local production and intimacy of material knowledge moving towards a sustainable (and beautiful) future. We hope to see more products taking a holistic approach to responsible manufacturing in the years to come.
The outing was not all business though, after the awards we hopped on the Saturday’s InDesign Free Tour bus to get a look at what was going on in local Melbourne design studios and showrooms as well as taking a moment to explore some of the more interesting nooks and crannies of the city.
